Drive Creativity To The Next Level With This Time Tested System
I’ve been thinking about creativity all wrong
Look up creativity in the dictionary and you’ll find a definition like this, “the use of the imagination or original ideas.”
I have two problems with defining creativity like that. The first is, “the use of imagination” and the second being “original ideas”.
The use of imagination
Expressions like, “use your imagination” tend to be surrounded with other phrases like, “think outside the box” or, “we need to think differently.”
Since we want to “get creative” or are being told “we need to think creatively” we look for the ON switch. By doing this creativity becomes a muse. Something we hope to summon to serve as a source of inspiration.
Creativity will come to us we tell ourselves. It is a state of mind we need to enter. Once we get there, answers will present themselves.
Marketing guru Seth Godin said, “I don’t believe in the muse at all. I don’t think there’s any outside force.” I agree. After all, how is telling someone to use their imagination different from telling them to use their brain?
